About the Author
Robert S. Levine (Ph.D. Stanford; General Editor and Editor, 1820–1865) is Distinguished University Professor of English and Distinguished Scholar-Teacher at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is the author of Conspiracy and Romance: Studies in Brockden Brown, Cooper, Hawthorne, and Melville; Martin Delany, Frederick Douglass, and the Politics of Representative Identity; Dislocating Race and Nation: Episodes in Nineteenth-Century American Literary Nationalism; The Lives of Frederick Douglas; Race, Transnationalism, and Nineteenth-Century American Literary Studies; and (upcoming from Norton) The Failed Promise: Reconstruction, Frederick Douglass, and the Impeachment of Andrew Johnson. He has edited a number of books, including The New Cambridge Companion to Herman Melville and Norton Critical Editions of Hawthorne’s The House of the Seven Gables and Melville’s Pierre. Levine has received fellowships from the NEH and the Guggenheim Foundation. In 2014 the American Literature Section of the MLA awarded him the Hubbell Medal for Lifetime Achievement in American Literary Studies.
Michael A. Elliott (Ph.D. Columbia; Editor, 1865–1914) is Asa Griggs Candler Professor of English and American Studies and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Emory University. He is the author of The Culture Concept: Writing and Difference in the Age of Realism and Custerology: The Enduring Legacy of the Indian Wars and George Armstrong Custer. He is also the co-editor of two additional books: The American Novel, 1865–1940 (volume 6 of the Oxford History of the Novel in English) and American Literary Studies: A Methodological Reader.
Sandra M. Gustafson (Ph.D. UC Berkeley; Editor, Beginnings to 1820) is Professor of English and American Studies at the University of Notre Dame. She is the author of Imagining Deliberative Democracy in the Early American Republic and Eloquence Is Power: Oratory and Performance in Early America as well as co-editor of Cultural Narratives: Textuality and Performance in American Culture before 1900. Since 2008 she has edited the MLA-affiliated journal Early American Literature. She is a faculty affiliate of Notre Dame's Center for Civil and Human Rights and a faculty fellow at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies.
Amy Hungerford (Ph.D. Johns Hopkins; Editor, 1945 to the Present) is the Ruth Fulton Benedict Professor of English and Comparative Literature and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Columbia University. She is a scholar of twentieth- and twenty-first-century American literature and the author of The Holocaust of Texts: Genocide, Literature, and Personification; Postmodern Belief: American Literature and Religion since 1960; and, most recently, Making Literature Now. She is a founder of the Post45 collective and site editor of the group's open access journal on post–1945 American literature and culture (post45.org).
Mary Loeffelholz (Ph.D. Yale) is Professor of English and Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at Northeastern University. She is the author of Dickinson and the Boundaries of Feminist Theory; Experimental Lives: Women and Literature, 1900–1945; and, most recently, From School to Salon: Reading Nineteenth-Century American Women’s Poetry. With Martha Nell Smith, she edited the Blackwell Companion to Emily Dickinson. Her essays have appeared in such journals as American Literary History, English Literary History, the Yale Journal of Criticism, and Modern Language Quarterly.

Title: Great Literature Surrounded by Leftist Interpretations of American History

Review: Great literature that stands well on its own. Reading the author’s hackneyed, patronizing interpretations of American history, obsessed with viewing all eras of our history through some creepy intersectional lens, was tedious and embarrassing for the author.

Title: Hopefully yours aren't shrink-wrapped, too

Review: So I have mixed feelings about this whole experience. This was, in fact, what was advertised and it was what I needed for my course. However, when the package arrived, it was shrink-wrapped with a warning label on the outside of the texts stating I couldn't return the material if the wrapping was bronen. Seems silly to have a rental textbook shrink-wrapped with a warning label not to open it. This seemed very scam-like. So I reached out to Amazon and asked them if I can open the shrink-wrap to access my books. After 10 minutes on chat, the representative had to get approval and annotate in my account that it was okay for me to break the shrink-wrap on the package. Apparently I would have been CHARGED for removing the wrapping if I hadn't checked first. The representative even told me i needed to be careful with the covers of the texts so I wouldn't be charged. Absolutely ridiculous that I had to get authorization to open a rental textbook. 😒 I'll use Chegg next time.

Review: I only got 1 of the 3 books. I needed them for an online class and I had to send it back and reorder the new set so I was garenteed to get all 3. I guess just buy them new instead of renting them because you never know if you will get the whole set.

Title: Try another manufacture - print is way too small

Review: Extremely disappointed with this text book, extremely difficult to read as far as the print goes - very small with serif font. Makes for the letters to blur together very easily - this is not reader friendly at all.

Title: Great condition, perfect for my classes

Review: The books arrived in great condition. I have enjoyed having the physical copy of my textbooks for my studies. I like to write notes in the margins and highlight important passages out of the books. These are really great anthologies, covering a large amount of work from the time periods they reflect.
